MEET OUR FOUNDER

After spending a year in the classroom teaching new users how to navigate and document online, Mary Welby von Thelen knew there had to be a better way.

A graduate of the University of Virginia’s McIntire School of Commerce, she had begun her career as a programmer but her desire to work with people soon led her back to school. She received a B.S. in Nursing from Fairfield University and began working night shifts after graduation.

Shortly thereafter she was selected to be a member of a team tasked with implementing a new healthcare information system at her hospital. An important part of any system implementation is go-live training.

Mary Welby became the expert at developing course materials and lesson plans as the hospital implemented the “train the trainer” model. She soon discovered that the experience levels and skills of the other trainers were extremely variable… as were their results. End users left the classroom with different levels of skill or worse – some were trained incorrectly and the documentation they thought they were recording was never filed.

Documenting patient care allows no margin of error and Mary Welby knew they needed to implement a foolproof solution: one that would deliver the same content each time, and then verify that the student learned it and learned it correctly. She combined her training, nursing, and programming skills and began to develop interactive computer-based training modules in 1997.

Computer-based training is the optimal way to teach software skills. Mary Welby explains, “When we take care of the information systems training, hospital educators can concentrate on skills that are most effectively taught using hands-on methods.” Based on more than 15 years of positive customer feedback, she remains convinced that interactive software training from OnCall Learning Systems is the most effective way to educate clinicians in the use of healthcare information systems.

“At the end of the day, our goal is to give end users more time to do what they really want to and need to do, and that’s patient care.”
